Why Choose Toronto?

Toronto is one of the greatest cities for a scientist to train in, and is also an extraordinary place to live. The “Discovery District” sits where the University of Toronto meets Toronto’s world-class research hospitals, including UHN. The high level of health research activity and collaborations with other disciplines creates an unparalleled opportunity for a trainee to develop and fully realize their potential as a scientist. Within UHN and the neighbouring institutions you can find great patient care partnered with health research and basic science, with an opportunity to attend a seminar and learn something from leading experts every day.

As one of Canada’s largest and most multicultural cities, there is something here for everyone outside the lab, too. A bustling metropolis with galleries, museums, sports teams, and restaurants of every variety, Toronto has a lot to offer, while the natural beauty of Southern and Central Ontario is a short drive away for summer escapes.

Several research institutes and teaching hospitals throughout other areas of the city also consistently produce top-tier scientists and high impact research. As a whole, scientific research in Toronto has had a tremendous impact on our understanding of disease diagnosis and prognosis, and the development of innovative treatments.

Why Choose UHN?

UHN is Canada’s largest hospital network, encompassing four hospital sites with expertise in a number of specialties. Each hospital site is recognized for excellence in distinct areas of specialization, a long and proud history, and a highly committed group of supporters and staff. Rooted in tradition and excellence, UHN plays a leadership role in the transformation of health care.

As it stands, 5 research institutes encompasses UHN and each specializes in different disciplines. With a  high level of health research activity and collaborations with other disciplines creates an unparalleled opportunity for a trainee to develop and fully realize their potential as a scientist. Within UHN  you can find great patient care partnered with health research and basic science, with an opportunity to attend a seminar and learn something from leading experts every day.

Who is a Trainee (and how to become one)?

Trainees at UHN include undergraduate or co-op students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

Training Program & Finding a Position

Principal Investigators (PIs) will occasionally accept undergraduate students as summer students, students seeking an undergraduate thesis project, or students seeking co- op study terms. As availability is variable, students are encouraged to contact potential supervisors directly expressing interest in temporarily joining the lab and by including a CV.

Some university departments affiliated with UHN have structured summer, undergraduate thesis, or co-op programs and list supervisors who are currently recruiting students. Note that the process for finding a supervisor and summer student position starts several months before the academic term ends, especially if an application for funding is involved—plan to start your search as early as December or January.

PhD and MSc degrees in several scientific disciplines may be pursued at UHN. Most Principal Investigators (PIs) at UHN are affiliated with the University of Toronto. Researchers, and therefore their students, at each hospital site are generally affiliated with a variety of different university departments. Students registering in a MSc program are encouraged to transfer directly into a PhD program after approximately one year if they demonstrate a strong aptitude for research. Individuals with an MD may also pursue graduate degrees at UHN and combined MD/PhD programs can be accommodated.

Finding a Position

Some students identify potential supervisors on their own and subsequently apply to the departments the PI is affiliated with. On the other hand, some students apply through their desired graduate departments, which have a system to try to find the best student-supervisor fit. For either approach, students are encouraged to visit the researcher profiles and university links to find supervisors and affiliated academic departments of interest, information on how to apply, and deadlines. Following acceptance into a lab, the student, supervisor and supervisory committee will work together to define the student’s program of study.

Postdoctoral training (not leading to a further degree) is available at both the post-PhD and post-MD level. Postdoctoral Fellows at UHN are primarily affiliated with UHN and governed by UHN policies and guidelines, not those of the University of Toronto. This allows for a wider range of Principal Investigators (PIs) at UHN who are able to supervise postdoctoral fellows.

Finding a Position

Postdoctoral candidates are encouraged to identify specific PIs with shared research interests by reviewing the researcher profile links, networking at conferences, etc. Candidates may then contact potential supervisors directly and include an updated CV. PIs seeking postdoctoral fellows for specific projects may post the vacancies here or on the main UHN Research careers portal. Following acceptance into a lab, the postdoctoral fellow and supervisor will discuss and define specific projects and timelines for the fellowship.

Opportunies at UHN

Prospective trainees are encouraged to review UHN researcher profiles on the Find a Researcher page and contact them directly as outlined on the Who is a trainee and how to become one? We will occasionally post additional career opportunities of interest to trainees, both at UHN and elsewhere.
