Congratulations to ORT Conference Award recipient, Prabjit Ajrawat! Prab Ajrawat is a graduate student in Dr. Hance Clarke’s lab at the Krembil Research Institute where he is investigating the immunomodulatory effects and inflammatory properties of medical cannabis and how it can help alleviate pain among chronic pain patients.
Prab presented his research at the 2021 Canadian Pain Society Annual Scientific Meeting.

Congratulations to Dr. Olivia Mekhael who is receiving the UHN-SHS Fellowship in Respiratory Medicine for July 2022-June 2023. Olivia is a postdoctoral research fellow under the supervision of Dr. Tereza Martinu and co-supervision of Dr. Stephen Juvet at the Latner Thoracic Surgery Research Laboratories/Toronto Lung Transplant Program at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute.
Olivia is investigating the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving graft rejection in lung transplants. Congratulations Olivia!

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Research Environments

The Graduate Peer Support Network (GPSN) at UofT is offering a seminar series presented by Dr. Nicole Kaniki. This series will provide a foundational understanding of what equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is as it relates to the research environment and research practices. It will discuss the barriers and challenges for underrepresented groups in these environments, and how to promote belonging and full participation in the research ecosystem. Participants will be provided with best practice approaches to recognizing, responding and redressing the inequities they experience and/or observe.

Cancer Digital Intelligence Spark Award
Register by March 14
Applications are now open for the Cancer Digital Intelligence Spark Award. The award will support four PhD candidates or Post-Doctoral Fellows by helping them leverage data science and machine learning expertise to uncover previously unseen trends in their data, in addition to providing $20,000 towards their yearly salary. In addition to salary funding, trainees will gain access to tailored educational webinars, 1:1 coaching with specialists, research day events, and more.

University of Toronto Data Sciences Institute (DSI) Doctoral Student Fellowships
Apply by April 11 | 8:00 PM EDT
The DSI Doctoral Student Fellowships are designed to support multi/interdisciplinary training and collaborative research in data sciences. To be considered for the Fellowship, applicants in PhD programs must pursue a research project that has a data sciences focus, through the development of novel methodology or the innovative application of existing approaches.
DSI Doctoral Student Fellows will receive stipend support of $25,000/year for up to 3 years. Fellows will have access to travel awards, administered through the DSI, to present their work at scientific meetings, or to participate in workshops/training courses.
