Congratulations to Mary Goombs on receiving an ORT Conference Participation Award! 

Mary Goombs is a graduate student in Dr. Gary Rodin's lab at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre working on improving palliative and end-of-life care both in Canada and globally. Her current masters project involves validating a new questionnaire to measure the quality of dying and death of patients who recently died in hospice care. Outside of working on her research project, Mary enjoys playing with her pet hamster Petal and rollerskating!

Congratulations to Narhari Timilshina on receiving an ORT Conference Participation Award! 

Narhari is a graduate student in Dr. Shabbir Alibhai's lab at Toronto General Hospital Research Institute. He is uncovering the active surveillance quality indicators development, measuring quality of active surveillance care and long-term oncological outcomes for active surveillance in low-risk prostate cancer patients. Outside of the lab, Narhari loves engaging in public health policy and talking about ways of healthcare system improvement globally!

Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile + How to Build a Resume

The ORT and Baycrest are collaborating to offer a summer student learning session on LinkedIn and Resumes! This workshop will provide trainees with practical tips on how to optimize your LinkedIn profile and build a resume to successfully navigate the post-graduation job market.

Writing Effective Grant Proposals
June 28 | 2:00 - 4:00 PM

Join the ORT to learn how to write competitive one-page research proposals. We will be joined by Dr. Peter Sabatini, UHN Laboratory Director and Graduate Centre for Academic Communications lecturer, who will speak about writing features of successful research proposals and provide tips for clear and effective research summaries. 

This workshop content will use the CIHR trainee funding awards as a framework; however, the concepts discussed can be applied to all proposal writing assignments for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

OSOTF Unilever/Lipton Graduate Fellowship
Apply before July 1 at 5:00 PM

On behalf of University of Toronto’s (UofT) Faculty of Medicine, the ORT is pleased to administer the 2022-2023 OSOTF Graduate Fellowship to support research trainees at UHN. These fellowships are awarded to graduate students, registered with UofT’s Faculty of Medicine, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence who are studying within the neurosciences field at UHN.

ORT Conference Participation Award
Apply before July 4 at 5:00 PM

The ORT is pleased to offer a limited number of conference participation awards to enable graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to participate in national and international conferences and share their research in oral and/or poster presentations. 

The value of individual awards will be up to $500 to be used for participation at conferences between September and December 2022.

Evidence to Drive Decision Making
June 14 | 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM 

The final workshop in a series on Research at Work: Science for Policy, will cover how science can impact government decision-making and inform policy. We will discuss the various pathways between science and policy, and we will examine the steps involved in communicating science to policymakers. Workshop attendees will learn from two expert speakers (one academic and one scientist working in government). These experts will share their experiences and their unique lens on the process of bridging science with policy. Finally, using case studies, attendees will have a chance to engage in the process of translating science to policy.

CIHR 2022 Info Session for Trainees in Health Research

CIHR will be hosting Information Sessions for trainees on awards in Health Research. These are designed to assist participants with the different awards funding opportunities requirements and answer questions on how to apply.

Gender in Research, an Open Forum
June 15 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM 

TIER's Open Forum event is a virtual discussion of two resources, the lecture by Kirsty Duncan, and the Elsevier Gender report 2020: The Researcher Journey Through a Gender Lens. We are fortunate to have Elsevier's lead expert on the Gender Report joining us at the Gender Equity in Research Open Forum. Holly J. Falk-Krzesinski, PhD, Vice President, Research Intelligence, Global Strategic Networks, Co-chair, Gender Equity Taskforce, Advisory Board Member, International Center for the Study of Research (ICSR) will walk us through the report at the beginning of the forum.

Prioritizing Health Equity in Traumatic Brain Injury Care & Research
June 16 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Monique R. Pappadis, Ph.D., M.Ed. is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Nutrition, Metabolism, and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) and an Investigator at the TIRR Memorial Hermann’s Brain Injury Research Center. Since 2004, Dr. Pappadis has conducted patient-centered outcomes research in stroke and traumatic brain injury. She has won several research awards, published over 40 peer-reviewed publications, and disseminated several educational materials for persons with TBI and their caregivers. Her current research includes elder mistreatment, health literacy, minority aging, and equity/disparities in care and outcomes among older adults with TBI.

Pride Month Workshop: Sexual and Gender Diversity
June 16 | 3:00 - 5:00 PM 

Join the St. Michael's Research Student Association and U of T's Sexual & Gender Diversity Office. This training will introduce participants to some foundational awareness and knowledge related to sexual and gender diversity. Along with reviewing some core concepts and terminology, participants will explore how sexual and gender diversity relate to work with patients in frontline and in research contexts. Further, the training will discuss concrete strategies to make workplace and health care provision settings more inclusive and equitable for sexual and gender diverse people through an intersectional lens.
