Developing Effective Mentoring Skills - Training Program for UHN Graduate Students and Postdocs Supervising Summer Students

The Developing Effective Mentoring Skills program is an opportunity for UHN graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to enhance their skills to prepare for mentoring summer research students.

The program will be delivered over two interactive, in-person sessions on April 13, 2026 (Ontario Power Building, Room 6-114) and April 14, 2026 (Ontario Power Building, Room 7-114) from 2-5 pm. The mentoring training will cover many themes, including:

  • Effective Communication
  • Aligning Expectations
  • Addressing Equity & Inclusion
  • Promoting Professional Development

Following the workshops, participants will receive a certificate of program completion.

The program is offered by the UHN Office of Research Trainees and utilizes curricula from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences In Research (CIMER) Entering Mentoring Program. Learn more about CIMER and the Entering Mentoring Program here. The curricula materials are designed for biomedical researchers, although the topics are broadly applicable.

Eligibility

  • Open to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers working in a UHN research lab who will be supervising a summer or undergraduate student in 2026.
  • Must be able to commit to attending both in-person program sessions.
