Dances of the Cure-abbean: Kaiso and breast cancer disparities in Black women
May 5 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM

The POZ-ZF transcription factor Kaiso was discovered ~2 decades ago as a binding partner for the cell adhesion catenin p120ctn. Since its discovery, roles for Kaiso in diverse biological processes, including epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, apoptosis and inflammation have emerged. Kaiso has been linked to canonical Wnt, TGFĪ² and Notch signalling pathways and is implicated in multiple cancers including breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancers. In breast and prostate cancer, high Kaiso expression correlates with aggressive tumors, poor prognosis and disparities in survival outcomes in people of African ancestry.
