Happy Pride Month

UHN is proud to celebrate Pride Month in honour of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. UHN is committed to creating a safe, inclusive space where everyone feels represented, reflected, and treated with respect and dignity. Pride flags will be raised across all UHN sites as a symbol of hope and solidarity with 2SLGBTQIA+ people. There will also be various Pride events at UHN and across Toronto to celebrate.

Pronoun Pins and Stickers
Available starting June 6

The 2SLGBTQIA+ Steering Committee and Research Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee are launching a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of asking about personal pronouns. As part of the campaign, pronoun pins and stickers will be made available at all sites across UHN. TeamUHN members who feel comfortable doing so can wear these as symbols to help normalize sharing pronouns. The pins and stickers also serve as a reminder to stand up against homophobic, transphobic, biphobic, or intersexphobic language or actions. Pick up a free pronoun sticker or button at one of these pickup locations:

  • Lyndhurst Centre: All unit nursing stations
  • Rumsey Centre: Unit nursing stations, Health Sciences Library
  • Princess Margaret: Health Sciences Library, Centre for Spiritual Reflection (M-909)
  • Toronto Western: Health Sciences Library, Centre for Spiritual Reflection (7th floor, Fell Pavilion, near the elevators), Toronto Western Family Health Team, Krembil Discovery Tower Administration Office

Everything You Need to Know About Grad School

The second learning session in the ORT Summer Student Program. This learning session will help you to explore everything that you need to know about graduate school. Hosted by graduate students at UHN, the session will cover topics such as how to choose the right grad program, how to choose the research area and supervisor to perform you research, and how to excel in research!

OSOTF Unilever/Lipton Graduate Fellowship
Apply before July 1 at 5:00 PM

On behalf of University of Toronto’s (UofT) Faculty of Medicine, the ORT is pleased to administer the 2022-2023 OSOTF Graduate Fellowship to support research trainees at UHN. These fellowships are awarded to graduate students, registered with UofT’s Faculty of Medicine, on the basis of financial need and academic excellence who are studying within the neurosciences field at UHN.

Dr. Javeed Sukhera’s talk will acknowledge the 1-year anniversary of the June 6, 2021 London attack, reflections on Islamophobia and the importance of moving from hatred towards healing.

Design for Healthcare Part 3: Analyzing Human-Centred Design Research
June 8 | 8:30 - 11:30 PM 

This is the third workshop in a three-part series by FIBRE at KITE on Design for Healthcare. These interactive sessions are for scientists, clinicians, researchers, designers, trainees, and other professionals working in multi-disciplinary spaces toward developing innovative healthcare solutions. In this workshop, we will discuss how to organize, analyze, and interpret data from human-centred design research in preparation for dissemination.

Big Ideas: The Future of Health Professions
June 8 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM

The social, cultural, and political assumptions that surround the term “professional” have never been subject to such question. At stake is what we mean by professionalism, what it means to identify as a professional, and whether the concept of profession remains useful. These debates are central to understanding the future of healthcare work. Drawing from the sociology of the professions and recent case studies of changes in healthcare work, Dr. Paula Rowland will explore the dynamics of these debates and their implications.

The Princess Margaret Seminar Series presents Professor Xiaohu Gao, Department of Bioengineering and the Center for Nanotechnology, University of Washington. The title of the talk is: "Re-purposing imaging contrast agents for targeted cancer treatment".

Career Spotlight: Research & Development
June 9 | 4:00 - 5:00 PM

Join the Guelph S2BN Chapter for a panel discussion featuring experienced professionals in the R&D sector. During this session, panelists will describe how they transitioned from academia into their careers in research, and highlight the roles and responsibilities of their current position. These presentations will be followed by an interactive Q&A session with attendees...bring your questions!

Evidence to Drive Decision Making
June 14 | 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM 

The final workshop in a series on Research at Work: Science for Policy, will cover how science can impact government decision-making and inform policy. We will discuss the various pathways between science and policy, and we will examine the steps involved in communicating science to policymakers. Workshop attendees will learn from two expert speakers (one academic and one scientist working in government). These experts will share their experiences and their unique lens on the process of bridging science with policy. Finally, using case studies, attendees will have a chance to engage in the process of translating science to policy.

CIHR 2022 Info Session for Trainees in Health Research

CIHR will be hosting Information Sessions for trainees on awards in Health Research. These are designed to assist participants with the different awards funding opportunities requirements and answer questions on how to apply.

Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology
Apply by June 15

The international Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology is awarded annually to one young scientist who is not older than 35 years for the most outstanding neurobiological research based on methods of molecular and cell biology conducted during the past three years. The value of the prize is $25,000 USD.

Princess Margaret Alumni Awards
Nominate by June 20

The Princess Margaret Alumni Award launches this year to celebrate the achievements of PM Alumni in advocacy, cancer control, academic research, innovation or education.

Former PM trainees and staff who have been alumni for 10 years or more are eligible for this award.
