Careers in Computational Biology - Panel Discussion and Q&A with UHN Alumni

The UHN Office of Research Trainees invites you to a career panel showcasing careers in Computational Biology.

In this panel discussion and Q&A, attendees will learn about careers in computational biology from the following industry professionals:

  • James Hawley, Computational Biologist, Roche
  • Natalie Fox, Senior Computational Biologist, Roche
  • Ramanandan Prabhakaran, Senior Computational Biologist, Roche
  • Sofija Spasojevic, Data Scientist, Roche

This event is free and open to everyone.

Speaker Bios:

James Hawley – James joined Roche as a Computational Biologist in2021 after completing his PhD in cancer epigenetics at the University of Toronto, working in the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre under the supervision of Dr. Mathieu Lupien. His background is in mathematical physics and computational biology, resulting from a Bachelor of Mathematics from the University of Waterloo. At Roche, James is part of the Oncology Bioinformatics Group, collaborating with scientists at Roche and Genentech, using high-throughput sequencing technologies to study pre-clinical drug candidates in a variety of cancers.

Natalie Fox – Natalie has a bachelor of Computer Science with a specialization in bioinformatics from the University of Waterloo and a PhD from the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto. Her PhD rotations included a lab within UHN before she joined the Boutros lab at OICR. Her PhD work studied prostate cancer genomics, -omic biomarkers and cancer subtypes. Since 2020, Natalie has been working as a Computational Biologist at Roche Canada.

Ramanandan Prabhakaran – Ramanandan is a senior IT professional at Roche, where he supports the g team. In this role he is responsible for developing bioinformatics/genomics workflows for Single Cell RNAseq, Bulk RNAseq, Whole genome, Whole exome, Epigenetics and Microbiome data sets and also genomic data management. He also collaborates with scientists from oncology, neurodegenerative and omni. Before joining Roche, Ramanandan worked as a Senior Bioinformatics Analyst in the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre at UHN. He has also worked as a Bioinformatician and Informatics Administrator at the Clinical Genomics Sequencing Centre in Mount Sinai Hospital, as a Bioinformatician at Agriculture and Agri-food, and as a Software Engineer.

Sofija Spasojevic – Sofija joined Roche in September 2021 as a Data Scientist. Prior to this, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Toronto (2020-2021) and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute at UHN (2018-2020). Her background is in Electrical and Computer Engineering and she completed her PhD through a bilateral doctoral program between the Instituto Superior Tecnico at the University of Lisbon and the School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade. In parallel with her PhD program, Sofija worked as an Associate Researcher at the Institute Mihailo Pupin in Belgrade. Her areas of expertise are Data Science, Machine Learning, and Signal Processing.
