Sustainability in Research

April marks Earth Month, and what better way to give back to the environment than by taking care of our shared home.

Join the Office of Research Trainees (ORT) and the UHN Green Team to learn about Sustainability in Research! In this webinar, experts will share research and tips on how we can change our research practices to reduce waste and increase sustainability. Learn about:

  • Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Sustainable Health Systems by Fiona Miller, Professor of Health Policy and Director of CASCADES and Center for Sustainable Health Systems.
  • Energy Efficiency Initiatives at UHN and The Quest to Decarbonize at UHN and at Home by Michael Kurz, Team Lead, Energy & Innovation, UHN.
  • Strategies Researchers Can Use to Work Sustainably by Maria Butt, Sustainability Coordinator, UHN Energy & Environment Department.

Learn more about green initiatives at UHN here. This event is free and open to everyone.

Speaker Bios:

Dr. Fiona A. Miller is a Professor of Health Policy in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. She directs the Centre for Sustainable Health Systems and CASCADES, a national initiative for climate action and awareness in healthcare funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Michael Kurz has been a member of UHN’s Energy and Environment team for the last ten years primarily as an energy manager. Mike has led and been involved in numerous types of energy projects, including many projects at UHN’s research facilities. Examples of projects that Mike has worked on include: LED lighting retrofits, building automation upgrades, chiller plant replacements and district energy systems, variable frequency drives, heat recovery, demand control ventilation, high performance computers, and more. Since 2010, the Energy and Environment team has achieved cumulative cost savings of over $40M, keeping UHN’s utility costs stable over time, despite increasing rates and expansions to our building footprint. Additionally, these projects have yielded absolute CO2 emissions reduction of 15%.

Maria Butt is a fourth year student at the University of Waterloo’s undergraduate Honors Public Health program. She is currently completing a co-op placement and working at UHN as the Sustainability Coordinator in the Department of Energy & Environment. Prior to this role, Maria worked at UHN as an At-The-Elbow (ATE) Support during the implementation of UHN’s new Health Information System, EPIC. After her time as an ATE, she was impressed and motivated to continue working at UHN, an environment that fosters growth and whose values of environmental stewardship fall in line with her own.
