Carpentries Instructor Training Program

UHN’s Office of Research Trainees (ORT) is partnering with University of Toronto Libraries (UTL) and Data Science Institute (DSI) to provide Carpentries Instructor Training opportunities. The Carpentries teaches foundational coding and data science skills to researchers worldwide. They train and foster a diverse, inclusive community that collaboratively develops openly-available lessons and delivers these lessons using evidence-based teaching practices.

Eligibility and Details:

  • Two UHN graduate students and/or postdoctoral researchers will have the opportunity to participate in a Spring 2023 Carpentries Instructor Training session. Additional opportunities may be available through UTL and DSI.
  • Applicants must have familiarity with at least one of the technologies taught in The Carpentries curriculum (e.g. R, Python, the Unix bash shell, or SQL,).
  • Applicants must have an interest in becoming a certified Carpentries Instructor and developing skill and knowledge about evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Applicants must be available for one of the two-day or four half-day Instructor Training workshops offered online this spring.
  • Successful applicants will have the opportunity to practice their teaching skills by facilitating Carpentries workshops for novice UHN graduate students and postdoctoral researchers through the ORT.
