During the session, a panel of legal and IP experts will share how they leveraged their scientific training to build their careers and offer advice for those interested in entering this exciting field.

  • Mike Colucci, PhD – IP Manager and Canada/US Patent Agent, Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON).
  • Lenni Carrerio, MSc, LLB – Legal and Intellectual Property Counsel, UHN Research Legal

Panelist Bios:

Katie Graham, MSc, JD – Articling Student, Smart & Biggar LLP

  • Katie obtained a Bachelor’s and Master of Science in Biochemistry from McMaster University before attending Osgood Hall Law School for her Juris Doctor. At McMaster, she earned the CIHR Canadian Graduate Scholarship for her research, which focused on investigating the regulations and dynamics of type IV pili in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. During her graduate studies, Katie took a Biomedical Commercialization & entrepreneurship which sparked her interest in the intersection of intellectual property law and science.
  • At Osgoode, Katie was actively invlved in the intellectual property community as a Research Assistant for Professor Giuseppina D’Agostino and writer for the IPiloge, Osgoode’s online journal of IP Law and Technology. She was awarded the IP Osgood David Vaver Medal for Excellence in Intellectual Property Law. This award recognizes graduating students with exceptional performance in intellectual property law of policy, reflecting both academic excellence and significant contributions in intellectual property research.
  • Katie obtained a summer student position at Smart & Biggar, Canada’s largest intellectual property law firm in both her first- and second-year summers during law school. She is now an articling student at Smart & Biggar, where her practice focuses on patent litigation and, more specifically, pharmaceutical patent litigation.

Michael Colucci, PhD – IP Manager, Intellectual Property Ontario

  • Michael Colucci is an IP Manager with Intellectual Property Ontario.  He earned his PhD in microbiology from the University of Waterloo, and after several years in the laboratory with Agriculture Canada, made the move to Intellectual Property.  He has been a practicing patent agent for 20 years, having worked in both private practice and in-house, and has drafted and prosecuted patents across a spectrum of technology sectors.  Prior to joining IPON, Michael was the Manager of IP and IP Strategy with an Ontario-based automotive components manufacturer.

Lenni Carrerio, MSc, LLB – Legal and Intellectual Property Counsel, UHN Research Legal

  • Lenni is Legal/Intellectual Property Counsel at UHN in the department of UHN Research Legal. At UHN, she advises on intellectual property matters and works with Commercialization @UHN and with UHN scientists in support of UHN’s intellectual property. Drawing on years of legal experience in IP law, Lenni helps identify and protect inventions and other valuable IP. Prior to joining UHN, Lenni worked at Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccine division of Sanofi as patent counsel. She practiced at Deeth Williams Wall LLP, a boutique IP/IT law firm, as an associate, specializing in intellectual property law litigation and prosecution. She is a lawyer licensed by the Law Society of Ontario and a registered patent agent in Canada.
