Join the UHN Office of Research Trainees (ORT) for a Zoom workshop on August 18 from 1:00–3:00 PM to learn how to strengthen your scholarship and fellowship applications!
During this interactive session, medical writing expert Sandy Marshall will focus on developing a compelling one-page research proposal, with an emphasis on impact, feasibility, and clarity. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive individual feedback from peers and the facilitator. By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Report results with suspense and surprise
- Build a structured and compelling narrative
- Revise drafts for greater clarity and concision
The workshop will also feature the UHN Research Grants team, who will provide trainees and postdoctoral researchers with an overview of the grant application process at UHN, including the role of the Business Hub in supporting research applications. Topics will include the institutional review and approval requirements, key submission timelines, and available resources to support successful applications.

Sandy Marshall is a medical communicator who has been contributing to biomedical research for 20 years. After a BScH in Life Sciences (Queen’s University) and an MSc in Medical Science (St. Michael’s Hospital and U of T), Sandy conducted basic science research at St Michael’s Hospital and Sunnybrook Research Institute. As a freelance medical writer and editor since 2013, Sandy helps some of Canada’s top biomedical researchers fund and publish their research. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate biomedical communication courses at U of T. Over her career, Sandy has co-authored over 20 publications, has edited over 100 publications, and has contributed to approximately 70 funding applications.
