What are government research roles?

Government research roles focus on generating and applying evidence to inform public policy, programs, and services. Professionals in these roles conduct research that addresses real-world challenges such as improving healthcare systems, understanding population health trends, evaluating public programs, and supporting scientific innovation. Government research roles offer a pathway to continue engaging in rigorous scientific work with systemic and population-level interests in mind. Unlike academic roles that often emphasize hypothesis-driven discovery, government research is typically applied, policy-relevant, and focused on generating actionable insights that benefit the local and national population.

Government research professionals work closely with policy teams, program/project managers, and external stakeholders to ensure that decisions are informed by high-quality evidence. Their work often involves integrating scientific literature, administrative data, and stakeholder perspectives to address complex issues and support public outcomes.

Research Officer

Research officers play a leading role in advancing applied research initiatives within government and public sector environments. Similiar to principal investigators in academic settings, they contribute to shaping research directions, leading or supporting complex projects, and ensuring that research activities are conducted with rigour and impact and is aligned with government priorities.

In this role, research officers are involved across the full lifecycle of research. They engage in the design and execution of innovative research projects, applying appropriate methodologies and analytical approaches to address complex scientific and technical questions. Their work often spans multiple disciplines, drawing on diverse data sources and integrating knowledge from across fields to generate meaningful insights.

Collaboration is central to the role. Research officers work within interdisciplinary teams and frequently partner with colleagues in academia, industry, and other organizations to support knowledge exchange and advance shared research goals. This collaborative environment enables them to contribute to specialized expertise while also learning from diverse perspectives. Research officers also play a key role in project leadership and coordination. They may oversee research activities by managing timelines, contributing to project planning, and ensuring that work progresses efficiently and meets established objectives. This can include coordinating contributions from team members and external collaborators, as well as supporting the development of proposals for new research initiatives.

A key responsibility of the role is the communication and dissemination of research findings. Research officers prepare technical reports, publications, and presentations that clearly convey research methods, results, and implications to a variety of stakeholders, including internal supervisors/teams and government decisionmakers. These outputs contribute both to the broader scientific community and to organizational knowledge, helping ensure that research insights are accessible and actionable.

Laboratory Technician

Laboratory technicians provide the technical expertise and operational support necessary for scientific research, testing, and analytical activities within government laboratories. Working alongside researchers, scientists, and other technical professionals, they contribute to projects that support innovation, scientific discovery, public safety, environmental monitoring, health research, and other government priorities.

Laboratory technicians are responsible for preparing samples, materials, and reagents, conducting laboratory tests and analyses using established procedures and approved methods to ensure that experimental work is performed accurately and consistently. They collect, record, organize, and maintain data, often using specialized software or laboratory information systems, and contribute to the preparation of summaries, reports, and technical documentation.

A key aspect of the role is maintaining laboratory operations and quality standards. Laboratory technicians operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on scientific equipment and instrumentation to ensure reliable results and compliance with quality assurance standards. They are also responsible for maintaining laboratory inventories, equipment records, technical logs, and other documentation required to support research and testing activities.

Across government research organizations, laboratory technicians are integral members of the scientific workforce. Their technical expertise and commitment to quality enable reliable data collection, support research excellence, and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and innovation. By ensuring the effective operation of laboratory activities and high-quality scientific data, they help transform research objectives into meaningful outcomes that support government priorities.
